 Yamaguchi Studies is a program consisting of four courses designed to provide students with an understanding and appreciation of the people, history, art and culture of Yamaguchi. The courses are offered on a rotational basis with at least one course being offered per semester. They are unique in that they feature not only a lecture component given by professors specializing in each field but also an on-site component that enhances and expands upon the understanding gained in the classroom. These on-site experiences are conducted by nationally known poets, local scholars, internationally known artisans and designers as well as the CEO’s of local industries. Classes are small and are conducted bilingually in Japanese and English.


 The four courses that make up the Yamaguchi Studies program are History and Calture of Yamaguchi, Art and Culture in Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi and the World and Craft and Design in Yamaguchi. History of Yamaguchi focuses on the history of Yamaguchi from medieval times until the Meiji Restoration.
 On-site learning takes place in and around Yamaguchi City and the sea-side castle town of Hagi. Art and Culture in Yamaguchi focuses on art and paper-making of the Edo period, the novels of Kamura Isota and poems of Nakahara Chuya in the Taisho and early Showa periods, and the ancient rite of Warai-kou in Hofu City. On-site learning occurs in and around Yamaguchi City, Hofu City and the castle town of Tsuwano. Yamaguchi and the World focuses on the relationships and connections Yamaguchi has with other countries and cultures world-wide. Topics introduced are emigration to Hawaii and Brazil during the late Meiji and early Taisho periods, the forced immigration of Korean citizens during the Taisho and Showa periods up until the end of the Pacific War and their continued residence and contributions to contemporary life in Yamaguchi, and Yamaguchi’s role in World WarⅡ and in current US/Japan relations.

 On-site learning takes place in and around the cities of Shimonoseki and Iwakuni and on the island of Oshima. Craft and Design in Yamaguchi focuses on two traditional crafts of Yamaguchi as well as two examples of contemporary design in the prefecture. Students learn about Ouchi Lacquer Ware and Hagi Ware ceramics as well as Denim and Bamboo design and production. On site learning takes place in and around Yamaguchi City and Hagi City.
